Today, Formlabs released the Form Studio 1, a resin 3D printer priced from $699, well below anything else in its lineup. The company is calling it “the world’s most affordable professional resin 3D printer,” and it’s a clear move toward hobbyists and prosumers, a market that Formlabs has largely left to lower-cost competitors. The printer is available now worldwide, alongside a limited Founder’s Edition in aqua, teal and violet.

Speed is a key selling point. Formlabs says the Form Studio 1 averages 40 mm/h across materials, putting most prints under two hours, and reaches up to 130 mm/h with the new Alpha Fast Resin. Automatic resin dispensing and fast resin heating mean users don’t have to pour resin by hand.

At launch, the printer supports nine Formlabs resins: six new Alpha Resins (Grey, White, Black, Clear, Model and Fast), True Cast Resin for jewelry and engineering casting, the elastomeric Flexible 80A Resin V2, and Tough 1500 Resin V2, which behaves similarly to polypropylene. It’s also an open system, so third-party resins can be used with a separate Resin Tank Pro.

The Alpha Resins, starting at $29/L, are low-odor, certified for long-term skin contact, and the first 3D printing resins to earn UL GREENGUARD Gold, a third-party certification for indoor air quality. When printing them with the optional VOC Extractor, an active carbon filtration unit that attaches to the printer, Form Studio 1 becomes the first and only UL GREENGUARD Gold Certified resin 3D printer. Formlabs also introduced the Form Studio Wash+Cure, a compact all-in-one post-processing station.
